False Cause
You treat sequence or correlation as proof that A made B happen - without ruling out rivals.
Explained
False Cause is the mistake of treating timing or co-occurrence as settled causation. Because B followed A, or because A and B move together, you conclude A made B happen without testing other explanations.
People build causal stories from cues like temporal order, covariation, and similarity - and those cues mislead when mechanisms, controls, and alternatives stay unchecked. A clear before-and-after story is easier to remember than a cloud of hidden variables. One vivid pairing can feel like a lesson even when it is noise.
Post hoc reasoning jumps from timing; cum hoc reasoning jumps from co-occurrence. Both skip the harder work of asking what else changed, what the base rate is, and whether a third factor drove both events.
Feeds and anecdotes amplify the error. Survivor stories, cherry-picked charts, and "I tried X and then Y" posts spread faster than boring null results or studies that control for confounds.
Some sequences really are causal. Vaccines precede immune responses, and switches precede lights because mechanisms connect them. The bug is stopping at timing or correlation when mechanism, controls, or base rates still matter.
Correlation can be a useful clue. Treat it as a clue - then ask what would have to be true for the causal story to survive rivals.

Real-world scenarios
Remedy and recovery: someone feels better after starting a trendy remedy and credits the remedy alone, ignoring rest, regression to the mean, or a prescription begun the same week - temporal order doing too much work.
Slogan postmortem: a manager attributes a quarterly uptick to a new slogan, skipping macro trends, a competitor's stumble, and a product fix shipped at the same time.
Credit for the wave: a politician claims credit for job growth that began before their term or matches a national wave they did not create.
One-good-week rule: after one better week following a parenting change, you declare the rule solved behavior that still varies with sleep, illness, and school stress.
Overlay chart: a viral graphic stacks two lines without controls, and viewers treat the visual overlap as proof one trend drove the other.
Impact
False Cause builds bad policies and habits. Time and money flow toward rituals, products, or rules that did not produce the outcome you noticed.
Blame lands on the wrong targets. People, teams, or reforms get punished or praised based on timing alone, which erodes fair evaluation and learning.
In medicine and safety, the error can delay real treatments or spread useless ones. Anecdotes feel persuasive even when controlled evidence points elsewhere.
Trust in reasoning drops when repeated "proofs" fail on repeat. You may swing to cynicism and reject real causes along with false ones.
Over time the habit trains superstition-as-strategy: stories replace mechanisms.
Causes
Pattern detection is a default shortcut. Linking what came first with what changed afterward is fast and often useful, but it misfires when many factors move at once.
Confirmation bias and storytelling reinforce the jump. Once you like a cause, you notice the pairs that fit and forget the times the sequence broke or nothing changed.
Media rewards simple causal narratives more than messy multifactor accounts.
Research
Einhorn and Hogarth's 1986 Psychological Bulletin paper reviewed how people judge probable cause from cues such as covariation and temporal order - and how those heuristics can produce systematic errors when rivals and mechanisms are ignored.
Later work on illusory correlation and causal learning reinforces the same practical warning: perceived links are not automatically causal proofs.
The practical lesson is to demand a rival explanation and a mechanism sketch before you treat "after" or "together" as "because."
How to spot it in yourself
- Your proof is mainly "it happened after" or "they rose together."
- You cannot name a plausible third factor.
- You have no idea what the outcome's base rate is without your favored cause.
- One anecdote feels like a closed case.
- You dismiss controls as overkill for a "clear" story.
- When the sequence fails later, you keep the cause and change the excuse.
Prevention
Keep pattern spotting; add rival hunting before you act on the story.
- Ask what else changed at the same time.
- Write two alternative causes and what would distinguish them.
- Check the base rate of the outcome without your favored intervention.
- Prefer evidence with controls, randomization, or clear mechanisms.
- In postmortems, list contributing factors instead of one hero cause.
- Treat viral "X then Y" posts as hypotheses, not lessons.
