Slippery Slope is the habit of treating one modest change as the first link in an inevitable chain that ends in a extreme outcome. Each step is asserted, not shown. The final disaster gets the spotlight while the connections between steps stay vague.
Some slopes are careful risk arguments with mechanism and base rates. Others persuade because the nightmare ending is vivid, not because each step is likely. The bug is the automatic slide: A must become Z because imagining Z is easy, while the probabilistic structure of the chain stays unchecked.
False dichotomy erases middle options. Appeal to emotion loads fear. False cause glues single links. Slippery slope strings many ungated steps into destiny. Policy debates, parenting rules, and workplace "if we make one exception" fights run on it constantly.
Precedents and path dependence are real. The bug is skipping the probability of each step and treating the nightmare ending as the default forecast.
Name the steps. Put a probability or mechanism on each. If you cannot, you have a horror story, not a slope.

How to spot it in yourself
- Your objection to A is almost entirely about Z.
- You cannot name the intermediate steps with odds.
- "Inevitable" appears without a mechanism.
- Reversible pilots feel as dangerous as permanent law.
- One exception equals total rule death in your story.
- Fear of the ending arrives before analysis of the first step.
Prevention
Steelman the slope or drop it.
- List steps from A to Z and score each link.
- Ask what stoppers exist - reviews, sunsets, thresholds.
- Compare to past "slopes" that did not slide.
- Prefer reversible trials when uncertainty is about the chain.
- Separate opposing A on its own merits from fearing Z.
- If Z is the real issue, argue Z's probability directly.
