Gambler's Fallacy
You treat independent random events as if a streak is "due" to reverse - as if chance keeps a fairness ledger.

Gambler's Fallacy is expecting a random process to correct itself in the short run because recent outcomes feel unbalanced. After several heads, tails feels due. After several losses, a win feels owed.
People expect small samples to look like the parent population - too representative, too quickly. A short run of red at the roulette wheel is treated as evidence that black must restore the average. Independence gets replaced by a folk theory of cosmic bookkeeping. Tversky and Kahneman's 1971 work on belief in the law of small numbers captured that habit.
The fallacy is not caring about long-run frequencies. Fair coins really do approach half-and-half over huge samples. The bug is importing that long-run story into the next spin, pitch, or trade when trials are independent. The wheel has no memory. Your streak does not pull the next outcome toward balance.
Related traps sit nearby. The hot-hand fallacy expects continuation instead of reversal. Outcome bias grades a decision by how the bet ended. Illusion of control adds a feeling that you can steer the correction. Gambler's fallacy is specifically the "due for a change" move after a streak.

How to spot it in yourself
- You say "due" about a random or near-random process.
- Your bet size rises after losses because balance is owed.
- You treat streaks as morally or statistically unstable.
- You cannot name a mechanism - only the streak - for the reversal.
- You expect families, RNG draws, or coins to self-correct soon.
- You confuse long-run frequency with next-trial probability.
Prevention
Reset each independent trial. History is not a coupon.
- Ask whether this process has memory or a real causal edge.
- State the next-trial probability without mentioning the streak.
- Cap loss-chasing rules before you play or trade.
- Prefer mechanisms and base rates over "it's about time."
